Albums
of the year
2016
It's been quite a year, this 2016. Americans "elected" a 70-year old, tangerine-sprayed, KKK-endorsed, pussy-grabbing, fascist, thin-skinned, daughter-lusting, draft-dodging, roly-poly, banana republic third-world man-baby dictator dropped off from the Planet Idiocracy for president, but that didn't keep my spirits down! I kept on trucking, listening to more new albums than ever, resulting, interestingly enough, in my smallest Albums of the Year post yet. But it's that classic total of 10 that everyone seems to love so much for some odd reason. "THERE CAN ONLY BE AN EVEN 10 GREAT ALBUMS PER YEAR" said the Lord. And so it shall be. At least for this year. 2017 does appear to be shaping up as a potentially great year for the long player, but in the meantime, there were 10 great LPs this year, including one fantastic "Album of the Year".
This presentation is in no particular order. They're all viewed as equally great here at the offices of Ghostlife, Ltd.

A Corpse Wired for Sound

I find this band fascinating. First, those vocals. They don't necessarily sound like they are that of an older man, but definitely that of a more mature man. An older soul, if you will. And despite a few albums already under their belt, I only recently saw a picture of the band, and he looks, let's say 23, which probably plays into the Morrissey comparisons he receives. To me, he doesn't really sound like him at all, but there is that maturity that he conveys, and he is without a doubt a borderline crooner. Second fascinating thing - these guys sound very, very British (and I'm not talking about the Morrissey thing); the sounds, the rhythms, the gothy escapism, the "sonic explorations" that are so indicative of British independent music. And yet, they are from Tampa. In Florida. And proudly so. When this album was released they even did a performance on the local morning television show, "Good Morning Tampa", or something. And it was sincere, and very charming. I wasn't so keen on the group's first album for 4AD a few years ago, but this is back in the vein of their pre-4AD recordings. Something so beautiful about them that seems obvious and yet hard to place at the same time. Mysterious, fascinating, beautiful. Highly recommended.
