This was a strange year, in the sense that without even planning it I ended up listening to more new releases than any past year. I think it was a subconscious thing, being in the middle of a "oh yeah I'll just build my own house and it will go perfectly with no hiccups whatsoever" type of situation. I was looking for something new and perfect to replace the new home which has yet to arrive. Luckily all this listening paid off as there were some really excellent albums this year. It started off slowly, only for some of the best output to come out towards the end. Killer climax, man.
This year I have not put together a playlist, but instead included a song or video for each review as a taste for the rest. And even though these are numbered as you can see, they are not in any order whatsoever. Except for #1 - that one truly rises above all else this year.

CHROMATICS
The rap on Portland, now LA's Chromatics is they are unpredictable. After the success of their 2012 opus Kill For Love, the promise of a follow up, titled Dear Tommy, has been floated since it's original release date came and went in 2014. Five years later, it's promised that it's still coming, and if this surprise album is any indication, Dear Tommy could be even better that Kill For Love. My hunch with this album is they simply had so many good songs - which didn't make the cut for Dear Tommy, they decide to compile them into a separate album to satisfy the growing impatience of the fans. Not that this feels like a B-sides collection - it just doesn't feel like the sort of focused "concept album" the band is known for. Perhaps that's why this is so refreshing, as it's less of a weighty listen. It's nothing more than a collection of fantastic songs that come from the dark urban noir territory the band, and the label have known to live in for more than a decade now. Check out the video here; if you're unfamiliar with the word of Chromatics, it's an excellent introduction in what to expect from this unique and disciplined band.
