Anyone But You

Screened at Regal Cinemas, Rancho Mirage, California.

I went for Sydney Sweeney. It paid off for the most part, she was charming and lovely, although she's going to need some time with her comedic chops.- they weren't really "all there."

I stayed for the setting, shot on location in Australia, primarily Sydney, if not all. Been twice, but it's been ages. Made me miss it, so that was a positive aspect.

In a rom-com like this, the chemistry has to work, and luckily with fellow lead Glen Powell, they had it. It wasn't a match made in heaven, but it was adequate enough for this kind of film.

For what it is, it's not a bad film. It was manageable. I could sit through it with ½ a grin, enjoy some of the chuckles, gaze at the beauty of both Sydney, and Sweeney, hate on the massively buff dudes, and groove along to some terrible fucking music from decades past that most of us have tried our hardest to forget.

The writing is stiff and ham-handed, the direction is lifeless and poor. Will Gluck - lookin' at you on both of those. It's just an overall cheesy and cheap affair when it comes down to it. But it knows it, and with the chemistry, it works. It JUST reaches the finish line.
