Ash

Screened on VOD.

I remember seeing the independent feature Europa Report at the Village East Cinema in Manhattan, killing off time for one reason or another. Based on a few reviews I'd seen, it was meant to be something really special, and I was quite excited to see it. It's always fun to find a film that's flying under the radar for most people, but for me there was nothing fun about it whatsoever. In summary, it was sleep-inducing. Perhaps not literally, but it was close. Just an incredibly dull film to me, but apparently it still has its supporters.

Now that I've seen Ash, also a hyped-up, indie space flick, I am thinking it's a genre that just ain't my bag. There were some good visuals here and there, from the musical-artist-to-film-director known as Flying Lotus, and the score definitely had some lovely moments. Even the cast was good and it was nice to see Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) in a new project. But this suffered the same fate in my view. Incredibly dull, and ultimately feeling drained of life. Maybe that's the point? Well it didn't work from that angle either. On paper, I imagine this film sounded full of potential. The final product shows otherwise.
