Bloody Axe Wound

Screened on VOD.

I know, I hear you. That title is ....... interesting. I see why they used it - this is a horror film and they want to get that crowd in. There is gore here as well, so there's no mistaking what kind of film this is. But that title feels detrimental to the filmmakers in terms of getting as many people to see your film as you'd hope. When I first saw the title I was intrigued, but sensed that Bloody Axe Wound was unlikely to be for me. I'm glad I checked it out in the end because while not a great film, it was unique and enjoyable with strong core elements.

The basics are this is a coming-of-age story, about a young woman, close to high school graduation, who continues to be raised by her father, a serial killer monster who is hoping his family tradition will pass on to his daughter. It's an interesting idea, and maybe stretches things a bit in the sense that it feels like they were really trying to find a new angle within the slasher and horror genres. But it works because the execution was much more adept than I was expecting (with a bland title like that, no less), and it was all supported by impressive casting, especially the lead Sari Arambulo who feels like someone to watch in the years ahead. Even better, the coming-of-age side (a top genre for me) to the story was not only NOT pushed to the wayside in favor of the horror, those moments were some of the strongest. The film felt balanced really well, which made the viewing experience solid. Overall I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised how the film succeeded with what initially felt like a rocky foundation. Maybe it was, but everything else came together really well to overcome that potential.

If you're a horror or slasher fan, I recommend this. If you're into coming-of-age films, I recommend this, if you can handle some explicit, yet fun gore. For everyone else, I say yeah go for it, but the jury's out on you.
