Bottoms
As much as I love "teen comedies" and "coming-of-age films," which is true that there's a ton I love, it's also true there are others that I've to this day never been able to connect with at all. Frustratingly so, as many of them are BELOVED. Some that come to mind are Drop Dead Fred, Heathers, Jawbreaker, Drop Dead Gorgeous, to name a few. I've never been able to pinpoint what it is exactly about those films that do not work for me on pretty much any level, but unfortunately I'm here to report that those same qualities are abundant here with 'Bottoms.'
I like the characters a lot, they're all rather charming (even the jerks), and the casting in filling those roles was a huge asset to making this film work, which it does for a LOT of people. Everyone except me, apparently. It's a strange feeling because as I'm watching it, I don't really question it's popularity with some, it's unique quality, it's importance for representing the queer community. I see it, recognize it, and appreciate it immensely. At the same time, so much of this I couldn't help but think "good lord, I really am getting old" because as much as I tried, I didn't see or feel the humor. At all. Did not laugh once. No chuckles, no smiles.
I did though have a solid appreciation and there is no question to me there's a decently-sized audience for this, perhaps fans of the earlier films mentioned. For me personally, my excitement for the return of fun, raunchy, teen sex comedies was dashed, rather quickly too as I could feel my that excitement leave my body VERY early on into the start of the film. I guess its time to leave what's left of the teen comedies .... for the teens.
