Don't Worry Darling

Reviewed at Oak Harbor Cinemas, Oak Harbor, WA.

In skimming through Letterboxd reviews for 'Don't Worry Darling,' it's been rather strange how many are putting this film down for not being "as clever as it thinks it is," and all I can wonder is where this accusation is coming from. To me it's rather clear and unmistakeable what influences are at play here, fully embraced, and that this is the screenwriters', and the director's take on this certain, I guess "niche" in cinema. Could the film be better? For sure. The script needs a polishing or two, but the film overall is stronger than it's getting credit for, especially for adding a more female perspective on the madness of gaslighting.

Where it lacks in script though I think are very strong elements, all driven by Olivia Wilde, here with her second feature as director, following the fantastic 'Booksmart' of a few years ago: the location shooting in Palm Springs, a known love of mine; the production design, the performances - specifically Ms Pugh, the cinematography. It's all rather beautiful and stunning to experience.

Its weak spots are glaring, but its strong spots are brighter. As entertainment, it comes recommended.
