It wasn't until that very last scene where the film's story and purpose became crystal clear. And it's a gut punch.

Cinematically, that's a problem, as what they're trying to say isn't clear until the final moments. But they saved it with the impact of that scene. Before that moment, it's a decent film. So be patient, it will all come into focus by the conclusion.
