Heavenly Bodies

Screened on blu-ray from Fun City Editions.

Another 80s film that was on my must-see list since first seeing the poster for it in the Arts & Entertainment section of The New York Times in early 1985. My father would notoriously purchase ALL the Sunday papers (New York, DC, and our local rag), much to the dismay of my mother because he would barely read through any of them, really. But I reminded her, even though Dad didn't read the Arts section, and would put up a stink when I grabbed that section before he got to the paper altogether, at least I was reading it, thank you very much.

ANYWAY - Heavenly Bodies isn't that remarkable a film really, it's another with not a whole lot of plot to speak of, and really we're just invited via this film to witness these women dancing their asses off to some relatively good and solid tunes. Well, solid tunes to me. I can see others cringing. Overall this is actually a pretty fun movie, especially if you're looking for something to help you escape and zone out. It does the trick by being a somewhat obscure Canadian film with no star power whatsoever. The lead in fact is a dancer and this was her first film which launched an acting career that is still going.

There's not really much to say else about an aerobics film like this, but one thing that really stood out and made me smile which not only was the film in some ways a "rip-off" of Flashdance, but they proudly wear that inspiration on their sleeve right from the jump, so keep an eye out, it's actually quite hard to miss.

Fun, purely 80s joy, and I'm here for it all day long.
