Incoming Freshmen

Like 'Pieces,' it's exactly what you think it is.

Screened on DVD The above subtitle may be a bit misleading. Well, it's correct in the sense that, yes, this is a late 70s drive-in sexploitation film, as I assume most of you would deduce from the film's poster, but not to the degree you would expect. While it is full of boobs APLENTY, catering to the drive-in crowds, and the implication of very NAUGHTY behavior is clearly made, it's actually a rather tame film, with little sex, if any.

I should also say, that while shot on film, this is not FILM, of course. It is not CIN-EEE-MAAAAAAAAA (said with snooty inflection. Inflection? Is that the word?). Despite distribution from a pre-Golan/Globus era Cannon Films, this is independent and low budget to the extreme. Knowing film itself is expensive, it basically looks like that is where the entire budget went. So if you ever decide to check this out, be ready for some rather guerilla filmmaking - even for this genre.

So why two stars? There is actually a little bit of charm in this which surprised me, which is via the two lead roles played by Ashley Vaughn and Richard Harriman, both with only this film to their credit on IMDB. Who knows what the situation was there, but they both were sweet characters and the actors actually brought that out quite decently (yes, this is almost shocking for this genre). So those two are fully responsible for the first star. As for the other, that goes to a couple interesting choices from the director, in terms of framing and breaking the third wall, that stood out, at least amongst the bare bones production value they're surrounded by.

Anyway, if you like time capsules, even those with certain levels of mundanity like Incoming Freshmen has here, then it's a fun curiosity, particularly cinephiles. But beyond that, I would not recommend this to the average person. But to film nerds, I say "What the fuck are you waiting for?"
