Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie

Play the Rivoli!

My take here comes from a place of knowing nothing about the backstory, which apparently was as a web series in the 2000s, or maybe it was a television series? Either way, it was called Nirvanna The Band The Show, and was apparently somewhat popular across Canada, with Toronto being the creators' hometown and a huge character itself, in the film version at least.

So anyway my take feels rather obvious, which is this is a loving, under the radar, guerilla-style and DIY-vibing remake of one of the greatest films ever made, 1985's Back to the Future. I mention obvious, because after viewing this I immediately watched a video from a film review YouTube account I follow, and during their 8 minutes of discussing it they didn't once mention the clear and VERY implied inspiration (perhaps not a strong enough word) of the original Robert Zemeckis/Steven Spielberg classic. But that's not a cut, as this film is really, really charming, not to mention clever, unpredictable, mysterious, funny, and just wildly entertaining overall.

I recommend two things. First, and I know this is getting stale at this point, but truly go in as clueless as possible, and just enjoy the ride. Second, be patient, because this will take a little bit to really sink in and reveal itself, even beyond how I've already described it as the sacrilegious and offensive act of remaking an un-remakeable film it is. HA! I guess now that I think about it, if I knew going in thats what this was, I may have avoided it. So I'm sorry if I've swayed you AWAY from this, but I hope you can trust me: its not overly overt. It's all done in a really appealing way where their love and respect for their inspiration. Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie is a weird film for EVERYONE, if that makes any sense. Strong recommendation from me.
