Testament

I was really surprised how meditative this film was in comparison to other "what's it like after a nuclear strike?" films that were "popular" in the 80s, such as 'The Day After, 'Threads,' and others. This wasn't graphic, it wasn't long, it wasn't tense, it wasn't loud - it focuses on the base emotions that would come when all of a sudden the world you used to live in is gone in a flash, presenting it in a quiet manner that avoids any accusations of exploitation that topics like this can bring on.

It's still a film about a nuclear attack, it's not going to lift your spirits or give you hope in an increasingly isolated world we've strangely made for ourselves, but it sets itself apart enough with good performances, direction and writing that makes this a pretty strong recommendation - if you're in the mood for it.
