You People

Definitely some funny moments, including those causing one to LAUGH OUT LOUD (ha), and a good enough concept, 'You People' is also incredibly frustrating because there's clearly a strong potential for something better here; I think most viewers would agree with that. The script clearly wasn't given the proper attention it deserves, especially when the filmmakers are lucky enough to have comedy gold like Eddie Murphy and Julia Louise-Dreyfus in their cast. Do they not warrant a couple proofreads? FFS. It certainly doesn't help that except for a few fleeting moments, Murphy seems to be sleep-walking through yet another performance here (lessening any excitement I had for the upcoming release of 'Beverly Hills Cop IV'). Maybe the script wasn't inspiring?
There is greatness in Jonah Hill, I think his debut 'mid-90s' showed that potential, but 'You People' felt like a constant struggle between an "edgy," hilarious, hard R-rated comedy, and a dull, trope-filled, rom-com made for the most general of audiences. I just hope that metaphorical dichotomy wasn't intentional. THAT would be rather disappointing.
Until next time, the balcony is closed.
